The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is the country's oldest and most prestigious public university, located on the iconic Chirunga Campus in Zomba. As of 2026, the university is led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise. UNIMA is currently ranked as the #1 university in Malawi by various international bodies (such as UNIRANKS and Webometrics) and is undergoing a major physical and digital transformation. This includes the construction of a massive 1,600-capacity teaching complex (funded by the World Bank/SAVE Project) slated for completion in May 2026, and the expansion of the UNIMA ECAMPUS, which offers 100% online degrees to students across Africa.
