University of Rwanda (UR) – College of Science & Technology; Center for Human Genetics (CHG)

Year established

The University of Rwanda’s College of Science and Technology (CST) and its Center for Human Genetics (CHG) function as the nation's primary engines for technological and genomic sovereignty, bridging the gap between advanced engineering and precision medicine. While the CST drives industrialization through specialized units like the African Centre of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACEIoT) and a newly modernized School of Mining and Geology, the CHG stands as the only medical genetics reference center in East Africa. Led by Professor Leon Mutesa, the CHG has achieved international acclaim for its pioneering research on the transgenerational epigenomics of trauma, specifically investigating how the biological impacts of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi are transmitted to subsequent generations through DNA methylation. In 2026, this synergy is exemplified by the MAV+ Project and collaborative "Impact Research" grants, which leverage the CST’s computational power and the CHG’s molecular expertise to advance biomanufacturing, genomic surveillance, and climate-resilient health systems across the region.
