Department of Animal Science Of IIAM
The Directorate of Animal Sciences (DCA) is one of the four core central technical units of the Agricultural Research Institute of Mozambique (IIAM). In 2026, the DCA is a critical driver for the livestock component of the national SUSTENTA program, focusing on three fundamental dimensions: animal health (sanity), genetic improvement, and quality control. Headquartered in Maputo, the department operates specialized laboratories and experimental stations to support the country's beef, poultry, and small ruminant sectors. Its primary research agenda includes the diagnosis and control of endemic diseases (such as African Swine Fever and Foot-and-Mouth Disease), the preservation and improvement of native breeds (like the Landim cattle), and the development of low-cost animal feed from local industrial by-products. By collaborating with international partners like IITA and the African Development Bank through the TAAT (Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation) program, the DCA provides the technical baseline required to double livestock productivity and ensure food safety for Mozambican consumers.
