University of Ghana

Year established 1947

The University of Ghana, popularly known as Legon, is the nation’s premier research-intensive institution and a dominant academic force in West Africa, currently ranked 8th in Sub-Saharan Africa by the 2026 QS World University Rankings. Under the visionary leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the university is executing its 2024–2029 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes a "Transformative Student Experience" through aggressive digitalization and a massive 10,000-bed hostel expansion project to address student housing needs. As a global research hub, UG secured over US$41 million in research grants in the past year alone, fueling critical breakthroughs in malaria vaccine development and climate adaptation while maintaining world-class standards in Law and Humanities. Operating through a collegiate system across its iconic white-walled campus in Accra, the university continues to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, fostering entrepreneurship through the Student Venture Support Programme and maintaining its status as the top-ranked institution in Ghana.
