Savana Agricultural Research Institute (SARI)-Nyankpala

Year established 1994

The Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), a constituent of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is Ghana’s leading authority on agricultural innovation for the savanna ecosystem. Headquartered in Nyankpala, approximately 16 kilometers west of Tamale, SARI is mandated to develop sustainable, climate-smart technologies that enhance food security and rural livelihoods across the Northern, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, and North East regions. In early 2026, under the leadership of Director Dr. Francis Kusi, the institute has gained national attention for its CSIR-SARI Technology Park, a revolutionary "living laboratory" that bridges the gap between scientific research and smallholder farmers by showcasing over 74 new technologies, including drought-tolerant maize and pod-borer resistant cowpea.
