Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute (PGRRI)-Bunso
The CSIR-Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute (PGRRI) serves as Ghana's national gene bank, to safeguard the country's agricultural biodiversity through the collection and characterization of vital plant species. Under the current leadership of Director Dr. Lawrence Misa Aboagye in 2026, the institute manages over 10,000 accessions, utilizing a sophisticated conservation strategy that includes a Seed Genebank kept at temperatures as low as $-20C for long-term security and a Field Genebank for living collections like cocoa and medicinal trees. The institute’s modern research priorities focus on climate-resilient germplasm, utilizing molecular technologies to identify drought and salt-tolerant traits in indigenous "neglected" crops, while also promoting non-traditional exports such as nutmeg and black pepper. By providing high-quality genetic data and maintaining an extensive 16.5-hectare arboretum, PGRRI remains a critical engine for Ghana’s food security and a leading partner in international efforts to preserve the genetic heritage of West Africa.
