University of Stellenbosch

Year established 1918

Stellenbosch University (SU) is one of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious public research institutions. Nestled in the scenic Winelands of the Western Cape, it is world-renowned for its oak-lined campuses and historic architecture. The university has transformed from an Afrikaans-language stronghold into a multilingual, globally competitive academic giant. Today, it consistently ranks among the top three universities in Africa, celebrated for having the highest weighted research output per full-time academic staff member in the country.

The mission of Stellenbosch University is to be Africa's leading research-intensive university, globally recognized as excellent, inclusive, and innovative. Under the current leadership of Professor Deresh Ramjugernath, who was inaugurated as the 13th Rector and Vice-Chancellor in 2025, the university is focused on "Vision 2040." This strategic roadmap emphasizes advancing knowledge in service of society, fostering transformative learning, and cultivating a diverse community where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
