Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining
The Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy, and Mining of Malawi was officially split in early 2026 as part of a strategic cabinet reshuffle by President Peter Mutharika to accelerate the nation's energy transition and mining industrialization. The previously consolidated ministry has been divided into the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Energy and Mining. As of February 2026, the Ministry of Natural Resources is led by Minister Alfred Gangata, focusing on climate resilience and the "Early Warnings for All" roadmap, while the Ministry of Energy and Mining is headed by Minister Jean Mathanga. This structural change is designed to prioritize the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project and the Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) program, which aims to drastically increase grid and off-grid electricity access across the country by 2030.
