Mapping the Future of Genome Editing in Africa

About the Africa Genome Editing Platform

The Africa Genome Editing Platform is a continental knowledge and collaboration hub, by AUDA-NEPAD, dedicated to advancing responsible, science-driven genome editing in Africa. Our mission is to map, connect, and strengthen the ecosystem of researchers, institutions, regulators, industry actors, and development partners working to apply genome editing for agriculture, health, environment, and bio-innovation.

Why Genome Editing Matters for Africa

Modern genome editing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs, and Zinc Finger Nucleases are transforming how we improve crops, livestock, and biological systems. For Africa, these tools offer opportunities to:

  • Develop climate-resilient crops

  • Improve nutritional quality

  • Enhance pest and disease resistance

  • Reduce post-harvest losses

  • Support sustainable agricultural intensification

Genome editing complements conventional breeding and biotechnology approaches while offering precision, speed, and cost-efficiency.
