Tracing its lineage back to 1939 when Lord Egerton of Tatton founded it as a farm school, a landmark transition occurred in 1987 when an Act of Parliament elevated the institution from a specialized college into Egerton University. The birth of Egerton as a fully-fledged university was a pivotal move in Kenya's academic reforms geared at magnifying the nation’s agricultural output and intellectual operational efficiency. Today, it stands as the premier destination for those seeking to revolutionize the landscape of environmental and agricultural sciences in Africa.

The mandate of Egerton University is to: a) Mastermind and Implement flagship academic programs and pioneering research ventures that drive rural transformation and regional integration towards the accelerated realization of a food-secure future; and b) Empower the workforce of Kenya and beyond, offer cutting-edge consultancy and knowledge-based advisory support, spearhead global resource mobilization for scientific breakthroughs, and serve as the continent’s primary technical interface for agricultural innovation and industrial development partners.
