ICRISAT (Matopos)

Year established 1983

The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) at Matopos serves as the focal point for ICRISAT’s work in Southern Africa, specializing in the improvement of "Smart Crops", sorghum, millets, and groundnuts, that are essential for food security in the world’s driest regions.

The mission of ICRISAT Matopos is to reduce poverty, hunger, and environmental degradation in the dryland tropics through science-backed agricultural innovations. In 2026, the station continues to lead the regional shift toward Education 5.0, focusing on the commercialization of smallholder agriculture and the deployment of climate-resilient seed systems. Under the global leadership of Dr. Himanshu Pathak (Director General since March 2025) and the local guidance of Dr. Martin P. Moyo (Country Representative), the center acts as a critical interface between international research and Zimbabwe's national agricultural strategy.
