Institut Pasteur de Tunis (IPT)

Year established 1893

The Institut Pasteur de Tunis (IPT) is a premier public health and biomedical research institution in Tunisia and a key member of the international Pasteur Network. Since its founding, it has served as a cornerstone of medical science in North Africa, combining high-level research with the production of essential vaccines and diagnostic services. The institute gained global historical prestige through the work of Charles Nicolle, its former director, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1928 for discovering that lice transmit typhus.

The mission of IPT is centered on spearheading scientific investigations and research of interest to human and animal health to catalyze the transition toward a self-sufficient and technologically advanced healthcare system in Tunisia. This mandate involves executing priority R&D into infectious diseases, venoms, and genomics, providing authoritative technical guidance to the Ministry of Health, and acting as the primary national interface for the production of biological products such as BCG vaccines and therapeutic serums.
