National Centre of Biotechnology and Biosciences (CNBB)
The National Centre of Biotechnology and Biosciences (CNBB) is a public research institution under the tutelage of Mozambique's Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES).The centre is mandated to conduct research, promote the transfer of biotechnological knowledge to the productive sector, and build national capacity in biosciences to address challenges in agriculture, animal health, and medicine. In 2026, the CNBB is actively spearheading the adoption of genomic editing to optimize agricultural yields and is currently led by Director Dr. Valter Nuaila (who succeeded Dr. Alsácia Atanásio-Nhacumbe). A major focus of the centre’s recent work involves the development of bio-pesticides and the improvement of crops like sorghum, as well as conducting vital research into gastrointestinal parasites and disease resistance in livestock.
