The university serves as a vital cultural and academic custodian for the region, particularly through the renowned performances of its Department of Theatre Arts and its expansive research in oceanography and the medical sciences.

As of December 2025, the institution entered a new leadership era following the appointment of its 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong, who succeeded Professor Florence Obi.
