Rwanda Agriculture & Animal Resources Development Board (RAB)

Year established 2010

The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) is an autonomous government agency under the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) tasked with transforming the nation’s agricultural sector into a knowledge-based, technology-driven, and market-oriented industry. Established in 2010 through the strategic merger of three specialized agencies (RADA, RARDA, and ISAR) to bridge the gap between scientific research and field implementation, the board is currently led by Acting Director General Dr. Florence Uwamahoro and operates under the National Strategy for Transformation (NST 2) and the Vision 2050 framework. Headquartered in Rubilizi, Kigali, with a historic research hub in Huye, RAB manages a decentralized network of 13 research stations that spearhead high-impact initiatives, such as the 2026 launch of biotech maize field trials at the Bugarama site to combat pests like fall armyworm and the distribution of high-genetic-merit bulls to scale up bovine artificial insemination. By professionalizing extension services through its "Twigire Muhinzi" model and launching the country's first Agriculture Extension Certification Training Program in late 2025, the organization continues to act as a vital link between climate-resilient research and the millions of smallholder farmers driving Rwanda’s socio-economic development.
