Université Mohammed V

Year established 1957

Université Mohammed V de Rabat (UM5) is Morocco’s first modern university, established in 1957 following the nation’s independence and named after King Mohammed V. As of 2026, it remains a prestigious public research-intensive institution, historically operating as two separate entities (Agdal and Souissi) before their 2014 merger into a single, unified university. Under the leadership of President Professor Farid El Bacha (as of 2026), UM5 is recognized as the #1 public university in Morocco and a top-tier institution in Africa and the Arab world, recently ranking in the 1201–1400 range globally in the QS World University Rankings. With a massive student body exceeding 85,000, the university serves as a national hub for legal, medical, and scientific excellence, housing the legendary Faculty of Juridical, Economic, and Social Sciences (FSJES) and the Mohammadia School of Engineers (EMI). Its research output is among the highest in North Africa, particularly in physics, chemistry, and renewable energy, supported by the Souissi Innovation City, a flagship incubator bridging the gap between academic research and industrial application.
