University of Mauritius (UoM)

Year established 1965

The University of Mauritius (UoM) is the oldest and largest public university in the country and a cornerstone of the nation’s higher education system. Situated in the heart of the island at Réduit, the university has evolved into a research-led institution that plays a vital role in Mauritius’s socio-economic transformation. As of early 2026, the university is in a significant leadership transition; while Professor Sanjeev K. Sobhee has served as the Vice-Chancellor, the university officially opened applications for a new Vice-Chancellor in February 2026 to lead its next strategic phase. Currently ranked #1 in Mauritius and within the 1201–1500 range globally by Times Higher Education, UoM is focusing on its 2024–2030 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes internationalization, financial sustainability, and "transformative education." With over 12,000 students, the university offers a wide array of programs across its seven faculties, including Agriculture, Engineering, and Social Sciences, and is a primary host for the Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme (MASS) for international students.
