National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC)
The National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) was created to serve as the apex regulatory body for Nigeria's seed industry. Its inception was a strategic response to the fragmentation of the seed sector, designed to enhance national food security and operational transparency by centralizing the coordination of seed policy, certification, and quality control. Today, the Council functions as the "gatekeeper" of agricultural productivity, ensuring that only high-quality, high-yielding, and disease-resistant seeds reach the hands of millions of Nigerian farmers.
The mission of the NASC is centered on spearheading a market-driven seed industry to catalyze the transition toward a competitive and self-sufficient agricultural economy. This mandate involves executing rigorous seed certification protocols to eliminate "fake" seeds from the market, providing authoritative technical guidance to seed companies and plant breeders to improve genetic purity, and acting as the primary national interface with regional bodies like ECOWAS to facilitate the cross-border trade of certified seeds.
