University of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria (UP), popularly known as "Tuks," is one of Africa’s premier research-intensive institutions and the largest contact university in South Africa. In 2026, UP continues to excel, recently moving into the top 600 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and ranking 5th in Sub-Saharan Africa in the inaugural 2026 QS regional rankings.

The university is currently led by Professor Francis Petersen, who took office as Vice-Chancellor and Principal in October 2024. Under his leadership, the university has doubled down on its "transdisciplinary" strategy, utilizing specialized platforms like Future Africa, Innovation Africa, and Engineering 4.0 to address complex continental challenges like food security and digital transformation.
