The University of the Witwatersrand, commonly known as Wits, is a premier research-intensive university located in the heart of Johannesburg, South Africa. The university is renowned for its high research output, particularly in deep-level mining, paleosciences, and clinical medicine.

The mission of Wits is to be a leading research-intensive university firmly rooted in Africa, while making a significant global impact. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Zeblon Vilakazi, who began his second term in January 2026, the university is currently operating under the Wits 2033 Strategic Framework. This vision focuses on "finding your why," emphasizing ethical innovation in the age of Artificial Intelligence and addressing the "Just Transition" in the Global South through sustainable development and social justice.
